Be My Baby
Jan 18th - Feb 5th 2005 - The Old Red Lion
Be My Baby by Amanda Whittington was formed the first half of fluffs debut production, paired with the world premiere of Snapshots by Andrew Neil as a double bill at The Old Red Lion. The run was a success, with sell-out audiences and critical acclaim.
Mary is a good girl. Her dad thinks she is looking after her frail aunt in the country ... but she's not.
It's 1964 and Mary has just arrived at St. Saviour's Mother and Baby Home, where she will join the other 'scrubbers': Queenie, Dolores and Norma, under Matron's steely eye.
Amanda Whittington's play uncovers a dark secret that history has largely ignored. This bittersweet production evoked a turbulent period, when the buoyancy of new, youthful music and optimism fought against a fading, oppressive post-Victorian society.
"Amanda Whittington's witty script achiev[es] it's full potential through the skill of the cast" Islington Tribune
"Sparky and affecting" Evening Standard
"Andrew Neil's thoughtful direction draws performances of warmth and believability from the cast" What's On London
